Beware Lest Midas Outshine the Muse

Re: "Lilly Heir Makes $100 Million Bequest to Poetry Magazine" (Arts pages, Nov.19)

I am the editor of an 18-year-old literary magazine, and Ruth Lilly's generosity makes me green with envy. But a gift this size to such a small organization is bad philanthropy. It does more than lavish funds on the deserving but cash strapped, it demands that Poetry magazine transform itself into a literary foundation.

The struggle for the staff and the board will now be how to spend the money. Sustaining the vision of a venerable little magazine will become an afterthought.

Drowning in cash might seem a dream come true; more likely it will turn out to be a nightmare.
